Replace a Desktop Power Supply (PSU)

Tools needed

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Anti-static wrist strap (recommended)

Safety first

  • Unplug the PC from the wall and hold the power button 10s to discharge.
  • Never open a PSU — capacitors hold dangerous charge. Replace the whole unit.
  • Ground yourself before touching components.

Steps

  1. 1Note (photo) every cable the old PSU connects to: motherboard 24-pin, CPU 4/8-pin, GPU, SATA power for drives.
  2. 2Unplug all PSU cables from components.
  3. 3Unscrew the 4 screws holding the PSU to the case rear and lift it out.
  4. 4Mount the new PSU, screw it in, and connect the matching cables (24-pin, CPU, GPU, SATA).
  5. 5Double-check connections, plug in, flip the PSU switch to I, and power on.
